Biography
Jon specialises in complex multi-jurisdictional insurance and reinsurance disputes. He acts for London market as well as overseas insurers and reinsurers and also acts for clients on a wide range of general commercial litigation and arbitration proceedings.
He has over 16 years’ experience advising clients on insurance and reinsurance coverage disputes across a variety of lines of business including property and business interruption, financial lines, civil liability and employers’ liability. He has been involved in matters ranging from the reinsurance test case for allocation of mesothelioma (asbestos) claims which went to the doors of the Supreme Court to acting for a large market of insurers in various significant financial lines losses. Over the last few years his practice has included UK property claims, in particular business interruption claims arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jon’s clients are primarily based in the London insurance market (both Companies and Syndicates) and he has particular experience and understanding of Lloyd’s syndicates, the run-off market and issues relating to Binding Authority Agreements/MGAs..
Relevant recent experience includes:
- Representing 18 London and international insurers in a US$250m claim relating to a significant trading loss involving a leading Irish bank.
- Various instructions relating to coverage issues arising out of UK property policies concerning business interruption / COVID-19 pandemic with possible exposure in excess of US$100m.
- Representing Equitas in the leading reinsurance test case concerning allocation of mesothelioma losses to historical reinsurance contracts. Case settled shortly before Supreme Court hearing.
- Representing the UK branch of a German insurance company in Commercial Court proceedings concerning a large loss following a factory fire in Manchester.
- Successfully defending a US$40m LCIA arbitration brought against a South African insurer in relation to a default under specific financial instruments including allegations of fraud.
- Advising a Lloyds managing agent on coverage issues following two separate notifications to its PI and D&O policies.
