In its 2022 Merger Control Update, the EU, Competition and Regulated Markets team highlight recent merger control developments in Ireland, providing commentary on the key trends and on the outlook for 2023. The number of notifications to the Irish competition regulator, the CCPC, saw a decrease to 68 notifications in 2022 from the 2021 figure of 81 notifications.
Activity in logistics and the grocery sector has been particularly interesting, however, the sectors which featured prominently in 2022 were professional services (which included legal, accountancy, consultancy, engineering, veterinary etc.) with a total of nine notifications, grocery (both retail and wholesale) with seven notifications and 2022 saw the return of merger activity in the construction sector (absent since 2019) with five notifications.
