Priyesh Patel specialises in public law having spent some 17 years working in the public and private sector on administrative and constitutional matters at the sharper end of the political focus. He is Development Vetted and also sits as a part-time Tribunal Judge.
He has experience of advising ministers and their private offices directly, assisting client departments in bringing to legal fruition their policy objectives as well as working on cross-Whitehall matters with domestic, European and global angles.
Relevant experience includes advising:
- Taking a leadership role as Official Solicitor to the Magnox, Independent Medicines and Windrush inquiries/reviews.
- Representing Defra and other Government bodies on the COVID-19 Inquiry.
- Representing the Home Office as core participant on the Grenfell Inquiry.
- Setting up the Manchester Arena Inquiry for the Home Office.
- Preparing material on public inquires for the Government’s Centre of Legal Excellence e-learning.
- Working across Government to ensure the UK had a sufficient supply of medicines as we drew to the end of the transition period and went through the Brexit door.
- Negotiating and preparing agreements with the Devolved Nations to centralise management of medicines supply to Westminster during the pandemic.
- Negotiating with the European Commission to reduce cost and delay of medicines supply to one of our overseas territories (working with the Government of Gibraltar, DHSC, HMRC, DiT, FCO and the European Commission).
- Leading a broad spectrum of judicial reviews that were the subject of significant media and ministerial scrutiny, including extending counter-terrorism legislation to cover organised crime and in particular grooming gangs for the Home Office and Foreign Office, High Speed Rail 2 for DCLG, fracking for DCLG and environmental matters where local wild life was threatened by infrastructure projects for DCLG and DEFRA.
- Negotiating and drafting the medicines annexes on the US-UK, UK-Japan, UK-New Zealand and CPTPP global trade agreements.
- Leading a DHSC consultation exercise investigating price controls to the generics medicines market.
