  • I didn’t know if I wanted to go to university, but I still wanted to carry on my education and get more qualifications. An apprenticeship seemed the best option as it combined working and learning at the same time. The people I work with are really nice and everyone is really helpful. I feel like I learn so much at work, as well as during my university hours. It is a really good balance. DAC Beachcroft allows me to have one day off a week to do my studying, which is great and it is really easy to keep on top of everything. Also, as I work with lots of people who already have degrees, they are able to advise me if I ever have any questions about anything I have learnt. The culture at DACB is very warm and welcoming. My team were very helpful and patient with me when I first started. Even though I am confident in the type of work I do now, my team are still really supportive and are happy to answer any questions I may have."

    Olivia Cunningham, Solicitor Apprentice

  • I qualified with DAC Beachcroft LLP in September 2019 having completed my training contract in the Manchester office. During my training, I gained practical experience in a number of different areas of law including Corporate and Commercial, Real Estate and Employment. The opportunity to move around the business helped me to gain a greater understanding of the firm as a whole. In my new role, I continue to be supported to take on a varied and challenging workload and I also have the opportunity to work with a wide range of high profile clients. I particularly like the culture of the firm; people are approachable at all levels and there are many different initiatives to get involved in outside of my day-to-day role which I find incredibly rewarding.”

    Zahra Khan, Solicitor

  • I was referred to DACB by the Social Mobility Foundation (“SMF”). I decided to apply for a training contract because of their partnership with the SMF and because of the broad range of sectors DACB specialises in. This was important as I knew I was interested in commercial law but I am, still to this day, unsure of what area of law I will qualify into – I wanted a firm which would allow me to experience many areas during my training. Moreover, I felt like diversity was fast becoming a buzzword rather than a reality in some firms. Throughout the application process it was impressive to see that DACB genuinely had a commitment to social mobility. The culture at the firm is extremely welcoming, supportive and embraces people from all backgrounds. Diversity is key to getting different perspectives and ideas and DACB’s work with organisations such as the SMF and Aspiring Solicitors demonstrates the firm's determination to appeal to and welcome into the business people with a broad range of backgrounds as the firm grows in the UK and internationally.’’

    Amanda Fosu, Trainee Solicitor

  • After joining DACB as an 18 year old with no prior experience of full time work, I can definitely say that in the past 6 years, I have climbed up a very steep learning curve. Navigating an apprenticeship can be a daunting task, but in my case, it has provided me with a unique opportunity for growth and development. Throughout the course of my apprenticeship, I have been lucky to learn from industry leading professionals and have gained invaluable life skills as a result. To name a few, my apprenticeship has developed my ability to problem solve, honed my ability to manage time effectively and perhaps most importantly, it has taught me how to learn from my failures.@

    Karrie Mead, Solicitor Apprentice

  • I chose an apprenticeship as I have always been an active learner, who is much more engaged and pro-active when completing a task whilst learning about it. I was certain I did not want to go to university and be overwhelmed with just study for a further few years following my a-levels and therefore after some research decided to take the apprenticeship route."

    Shanice Clarke, Solicitor Apprentice

  • A typical day for me involves utilising the flexible working benefits of working at DACB. We can start the day anytime between 8-10am which allows me to fit studying into my working day when it works for me whether this be during the morning before work; finishing work at 4 and studying after work or fitting studying into my lunchbreak. The flexibility allowed with this is one of the key benefits which has enabled me to pass my exams up to this point. I have a case load of around 50 cases which I handle independently with supervision. This allows me to learn the processes necessary to work as an effective team member but also provides support to build up my confidence as I learn."

    Georgina Winmill, Solicitor Apprentice

  • I was initially a little bit dubious about how beneficial an apprentice might actually be but I was wrong to hold such a view. The apprentice we had into our team contributed massively in terms of effort, ideas and development. They worked hard and helped deliver a number of projects – some of which had simply stalled due to lack of resource. They became a hugely beneficial part of the team and the more we invested in them as a team, the better they performed."

Evan Morgan, Head of Bids – Clients and Markets

Aspiring Apprentice FAQs (Legal Apprenticeships):

What is a Legal Apprenticeship and why should I consider this route?

A legal apprenticeship provides a route into the legal profession without the need to attend university. Instead, you spend most of your time gaining real-life, on the job experience whilst undertaking a small proportion of study at the same time. During your apprenticeship you will gain skills that will be relevant to your legal career straightaway. You will be given the opportunity to develop these throughout the course of your apprenticeship, allowing you to progress in the legal profession and meet the expectations of employers.

Can I apply for a Legal Apprenticeship at all DACB office locations?

Currently DACB offer entry level Paralegal Apprenticeships in our England and Wales offices. In Wales the Paralegal Apprenticeship is a Level 3 qualification delivered by Brightlink Learning. In England the Paralegal Apprenticeship is also at Level 3 and is delivered by BPP. All legal apprenticeship vacancies are advertised via our DACB careers website typically during the spring each year.

What will my journey look like if I take the Legal Apprenticeship route?

At DACB you start your legal apprenticeship as a Paralegal Apprentice. This gives you the opportunity to work within one team for two years and gain a foundation in law. Upon successful completion of the Paralegal Apprenticeship there are opportunities to progress onto the Solicitor Apprenticeship for a further 4 years before passing the SQE and qualifying as a Solicitor.

This is based on a full-time work pattern of 4 days in the office and 1 day for study per week.

What does the Legal Apprenticeship qualify me to do? What will my qualification be at the end of my study?

Legal apprenticeships provide you with the knowledge, skills and experience to help you succeed in the legal profession. Upon completing the Paralegal Apprenticeship you will receive a Paralegal Level 3 Apprenticeship Certificate of Higher Education (Law and Legal Practice). This qualification will give you the knowledge and experience to start your career as a Paralegal.

Alternatively, upon completion of the Paralegal Apprenticeship there may be the opportunity to progress onto the Solicitor Apprenticeship. If taking this route you will receive a Solicitor Level 7 Apprenticeship LLB (Hons) Law and Legal Practice qualification which along with the experience you gain, enables you to practise as a qualified solicitor.

I am interested in applying for a Legal Apprenticeship at DACB, what is the application process?

The application window opens in late Spring 2024 which consists of an online application form and video interview. As part of the next steps, you will be invited to attend an assessment day which will involve a written exercise, interview, and a group exercise. If you are successful, an offer will be made for a September 2024 start.

What are the grade requirements for the Paralegal Apprenticeship?

Minimum of CCC / 96 ACAS points.

How many apprentices does DACB take on each year?

This is subject to business needs, and can change every year.

How much study time will I have?

All apprentices are required to undertake 20% of their working week as study/development time. This is usually one day which will be agreed with your learning provider and/or line manager. The remaining 80% of your week will be spent working with and learning from your line manager, team and clients. Your study will be delivered through various modes including online teaching, coaching and workplace development.

How many paid hours are there per week?

You would be paid on a full time contract (35 hours per week) with one paid day dedicated to study.

Is a secondment opportunity available throughout the apprenticeship?

Yes there can be, however this is not guaranteed and depends on business needs.

Will I receive a contract?

Yes, following the recruitment process if you are successful in being offered an apprenticeship, you will receive a full offer pack from our Recruitment/Early Talent team. This will include a contract detailing the terms and conditions of your employment as an apprentice with DAC Beachcroft.

What support will I receive?

You won’t be thrown in at the deep end; your training will be carefully planned by your team and you will work in a supportive and rewarding environment.

How will I be assessed in the work place?

There will be regular checkpoints to ensure you are meeting the expectations of the programme. You will also be required to complete a portfolio which should contain evidence of work you complete. The portfolio is required for your end point assessment which takes place in the final 3 months of your apprenticeship. This will involve two assessments and an interview.

Do I receive a salary whilst completing an apprenticeship?

Yes, all of our apprentices are paid a salary which is regularly reviewed for each year of study.

What are the other options for me to study an apprenticeship at DACB?

You may like the idea of working in a law firm but don't want to be a lawyer, we have a number of other Apprenticeship opportunities in key areas such as Finance, IT, Data, Marketing, and HR that you can apply for. These are recruited at different times throughout the year so keep an eye on our careers page for more information.
