Courts Service and Commercial List updates
Practitioners are advised that the Courts Service will roll out a new Case Management System from 2 October 2023, the first day of the new court term. This is a significant step in the modernisation programme currently underway, which aims to enhance the services available to court users.
The Future of Defamation Proceedings in Ireland
On 28 March 2023, the Minister for Justice published a Draft General Scheme of the Defamation (Amendment) Bill which has been forwarded to the Joint Committee on Justice for pre-legislative scrutiny. If the draft Bill is implemented in its current form, dramatic changes will be made to the existing Defamation Act 2009.
Compulsory Mediation for Small Claims introduced in the UK
Following a period of consultation between the UK government and stakeholders, the Ministry of Justice in the UK has recently confirmed that compulsory mediation has been introduced for claims with a value up to £10,000.

The processing of children’s personal data is afforded special protection under both the Data Protection Act 2018 and the GDPR. In addition, the Irish Data Protection Commission published a comprehensive guide entitled “Children Front and Centre: Fundamentals for a Child-Oriented Approach to Data Processing”.
